Period 3 Weight Training Blog # 7 Supplements

This week we are going back to nutrition to take a look at performance enhancing supplements. First off I want to know what you know. List for me what supplements you have used or heard of in the past. I want to get an idea of where you are coming from. Supplements can be anything from protein powders to creatine. Anything you can buy at GNC or Vitamin Shop would qualify

The only supplement I have used is a "Xyience High Protein Powder." I like it mainly because it's Delicious, but also because it has 25 grams of protein per serving with no creatine. When considering a supplement I try to stay away from creatine because I don't know that much about it. I have heard mixed messages about creatine's effects to the point where I don't know what to think about it. Some have told me creatine is great and has no risk, whereas others have told me that it only fills your muscles with water so you appear bigger but are not any stronger.

I am not a strong advocate of supplements at all. They are sometimes great to use, but food is the best source of energy for humans. Whey protein is a convenient form to supply your body amino acids with. Creatine never really worked that well for me so I stopped taking it. In the average size adult male, it increases weight by about five pounds due to the excess water stored. It is by no means something a beginning lifter should use. Only something someone should use after hitting a plateau on growth. Creatine simply donates a phosphate group to ADP in which the D stands for Di, or TWO in order to convert it back to ATP, or Adenosin Triphosphate. This is substance your body uses in order to perform work. It is naturally produced by the body as well as converted from ADP but the creatine supplementation allows the process to occur more rapidly. Because of this, more sets and reps may be performed. It will not increase your max on a certain workout most likely though.

As for pro hormones... I am not sure of the legality of many of them. I do know that they are pre cursors to hormones such as testosterone, which naturally occurs in the body. Due to the body's natural reaction of adaption, taking these will make your body dependent on them. Taking them in your teen years can have detrimental effects on your endocrine system. Do not consider taking these, ever. It is not worth it. That's pretty much all that comes to mind when I think of supplements.

supplements
Used:
Whey protein shake
Muscle milk
Multivitamins
Protein bars/power bars

I've heard of other things like creatine and that creatine isn't very good for the body. Some people take specific vitamins to help them in certain things. Also some people take hormones and steroids that can have a bad effect on the body

The only supplements i have had are one muscle milk and a milkshake made of protein powder. I do not use any supplements regularly and i do not know much about them. I achieve my best results from gaining strength naturally and the body benefits more from a natural increase in strength because it is able to retain the strength longer and you do not become dependent on any substances.

Fish Oil: A lot of studies show that Fish Oil has really good health benefits for your heart, joints, memory, skin, eyes, and basically everything else. YOu could get fishoil from eating fish, but a lot of fish contains mercury which is destructive to one's health, so its safer to take Fish Oil supplements.

Throughtout my lifting life i have taken various types of supplements. I used Nitro tech hardcore, whey protein, and gackic. I also always take Vitamin C and calcium before going to bed at night.
