Period 5 Next Steps

Next week we will be selecting teams for the Invasion Games Unit. Our procedure for selecting teams is like the NBA Draft.

The instuctors act like the Commissionsers of the league and have final say in league operations and will select "Franchise Owners" that are in charge of selecting teams from a list of "Free Agents". Franchise Owners are also players on the team.

When they select teams they will go away from the group and be given a draft order number. They will select in there order going 1, 2, 3, 4, 5, 6, 7, 8 and then back down 8, 7, 6, 5, 4, 3, 2, 1, with 8 picking first in the second round. The draft order continues to snake until all athletes have been selected
(1,2,3,4,5,6,7,8,8,7,6,5,4,3,2,1,1,2,3,4,5,6...). This is done away from the group so that no external pressures are put upon the Franchise Owners.

What are the benifits to selecting like this? What are some potential problems? Should there be trades in the season? Are there any things you would like to add to this procedure?

I think that everyone has a fair shot of being picked. Potential problems could be that people who are not as good would be picked last. I think you should not trade people so the people who you trade wouldn't feel bad. I dont have any suggestions.

The benefits are, like stated before, that the captains are not put under any pressure from their friends to pick them. Their friends could get mad because they're on different teams. Because they can't see when they're selected, they don't know if their captain friend didn't get to them fast enough or if they were skipped over. If both players and captains agree, then trades should be allowed to satisfy majority rule. I would not like to add anything to this procedure, since I think it's fair to everyone, but only if the captain's order of selection is randomly picked so that the worst spot (8) is not stuck on anyone who can complain of unfairness.

I think it is a good idea because then, like anglea said, everyone can have a fair chance and the captains can have a fair shot as well. Problems could be that captain #1 gets the first and 16th pick. I think trading should be flexible and different for each team. If you don't like your team then you should be allowed to switch.

The benefits are that the draft is random and fair. A problem could be if the teams were uneven or if someone didn't like their team. Trades should be allowed to even out the teams. I don't have any suggestions.

The benefits of selecting in this manner are that almost everyone has a fair shot at being chosen. A problem is that the people with lesser skills are most likely going to be selected last. There should be trades when necessary, but the person doing the trading should consider their trade carefully before hand. I have no ideas for what to add to this procedure.

The benefits of this selection method are that the captains are not put under any pressure by their friends to pick them and can base their decision on the friend's skill. However, this method might be detrimental to one's self-esteem and psychologically cause one to perform worse during the game if his friend doesn't not pick him for the team. Trades should only occur if the people being traded don't mind. I have no suggestions to make, but I would like to add that every captain should get a different draft number each time different teams are picked as it wouldn't be fair if one gets seven or eight.

this is rachel...I think that the benefits are that no one will be left out. I think thatsome problems could be the trading and that it could cause friends to trade others to be with each other. I have no suggestions.

I think the draft is fair and any problems will be that the better people will get chouse first. I don't think there should be trades because people would just trade untill with all their friends.

I think its fair because everyone gets picked an d nobody knows when they get picked so they cant complain.

Understandably, everyone dreads "drafts" since there is a persistent fear of being picked last. However, I trust the captians that have been elected can eliminate this problem and choose wisely, not picking based on freindship or ability. Personally, I lack and suggestions.

i think that this way of picking teams makes the teams more equal and random. a potential problem could be that if people traded then the team levels wouldn't be the same. I have no suggestions for this procedure.

The benefits are that there are no "super" teams and there are no "horrible teams". It's kind of a balancing act. Potential problems could be teamwork. If you end up picking people you can't work with, then your performance as a team will not do well. If the teams are not balanced enough, then there should be team changes, but the Franchise Owners should be able to discuss about the trade, prior to the trade so that the trade isn't made without their say. Re-drafts could be something added to this procedure, so that everyone will be able to play with different people, instead of just one team.

Everyone has a fair chance of being picked. Problems might be that the bad kids might get picked last or the captain would only pick his/her friends. Trading like lauren said should be flexible, because if you have a kid who does nothing on your team what's the point of having them?. Nothing should be added everthing is fair.

Benefits: Captains, or "franchise owners", aren't under pressure from their classmates to pick them.

Delta: Kids who are not "good enough" according to the "franchise owners" standards, are most likely to be picked last.

Thoughts: I think that you, Mr. Kirk, should pick our last 3. This will make our teams somewhat even and fair.

Trading: When trading, the concept of majority rule should be kept in mind. This way, nobody is offended. Teamwork is what it's all about.

i think this is fair.there is no pressure for the captin this way but if we traded then we would trade for better people or friends, so it wouldnt be that good.

I don't think this is an affective way to pick teams. People who are picked last will feel bad about themselves. I think this is a good way to pick teams because everyone has the same chance of getting picked. Trading should be allowed to make the teams even and fair. I don't have any suggestions.

This method gives everyone a good chance of having some bad people on their team and some good people on their team so that one certain team won't have a disadvantage. Although there probably will be a team that has worse players then other teams. Trading players may be a good idea when it comes to who is or isn't a skillful player, however the person being switched may feel bad about themselves. I dont have any suggestions.

its a good idea that its a draft becuase ive been playing with the same people for the past few days and it also seperates the good players and spreads them out. but are we going to play normal rules or be lay back like we have for that past few days?

The system of choosing players identified in the post is a good way to insure that the teams are not stacked IF the the class can be divided into groups of 8, in which each group is of the same level and skill. However, if there are only 4 great players and all the others are bad players, only 4 teams will get good players while the other teams get bad players only.

Trades in the season are a good way to balance out your team, for example say you want your team to focus on shots made from far. Then a team would want to trade in a power forward for a shooting guard so that there are more shooting guards on the team.

I think this is a fair process, because they can pick who they want. Sometimes two people might want the same person but they have to wait their turn.

Mr.Kirk,

I didn't understand blog2 so my Esol teacher helped explain it to me. I posted my comment today.

I checked Edline and it said I didn't do blog 2.

But it's up here.

The benefits are that no one is pressured to pick their friends, so you can make a good team, without pressure. Some problems are that some franchisers may not get to pick as many times as others because of the limited amount of people in class. There should be trades if both parties agree, incluing the the people involved and the whole team, so that we do not end up with severely unbalanced teams when it comes to skill. I have nothing else to add to this procedure.

The benifits to selecting this would be that your team would be pretty even because your choosing best to worst and not everyone gets like the best players if you draft like this but potential problems might be feeling might get hurt if they find out that they were the last ones picked. I think there should be a trade later on because if a team is conquering and another team hasnt even won a game they should be able to get new players that might help more. I have nothing else to add to the procedure

I think that this is a fair way to choose teams because everyone has a chance to be on a good team. Captains also won't have the pressure of picking thier friends. A problem could be that the teams ended up with uneven skill or if someone didn't get along with their other team members. I think that trades should be allowed because that could be a solution to potential problems.
