Period 7 Weight Training Blog # 3 The Squat

If I had a dollar for every time a student told me, I can't squat because I have bad knees, I could retire early.

"Not only is the squat not detrimental to the knees it is remarkably rehabilitive of cranky, damaged, or delicate knees. In fact, if you do not squat, your knees are not healthy regardless of how free of pain or discomfort you are." Crossfit Journal Dec. 2002

We spend a lot of time making sure our squat form is perfect, because it is the foundation of all good human movement. In your comments, let me know what cue or tip helps you perform the squat with perfect form. What do you focus on while you are squatting? If you do not think about anything list one of the 23 "How to Squat" cues I gave you.

What helps me maintain proper squat form is remembering that the hip goes out and back before anything else happen. After the initial motion, I let my hip lead the the rest of my movement in a wide arc the entire way down. This helps my knees stay in place, as they do not need to bend forward if I bring the my hips back enough. As for avoiding spinal flexion, I keep in mind to face forward and to keep my chin up while keeping my chest out and my elbows above my shoulders. All of these factors keep my back from bending, whether they be through mental or structural means.

The tip that helps me perform a good squat is how much i need to bend my knees because if i don't bend them enough, then i don't get much improvement. The thing i focus on when squatting is making sure my knee goes over the toe of my foot so i know i am doing it correctly.

in order to perform a perfect squat form i keep my feet a little wider than shouder width apart and have them pointing outward a little. then i stick my butt out on my way down while looking upwards, also trying to keep the back straight help to do a perfect squat

when i squat i first make sure that my legs and in a good position not to wide and feet aren't pointed outwards. during the squat i focus on my knees butt and back making sure that i put my butt out and sit down and not going forward on my knees and not allowing them to pass my toes. with my back i make sure it stays in athletic postion and i dont hunch over

The tip that helps me maintain proper form when performing a squat is by finding a spot on the ceiling and staring at it, dropping my hips back, keeping my back straight and not crooked or slanted, and getting parallel as fast as I can, and by driving my hips up. That is what keeps my form from slipping away. - Zach Latter

The tips that I use to perform a good squat are to always bend my knees, hips out, chest out and to keep my head up...I usually focus on making sure the basic things are right and that I go all the way down,as far as I can before coming back up to get the most workout in that one rep..

What I focus on during squatting is sitting back with my hips first. I also make sure not to arch my back and I tighten my abs.

The first cue or tip I always think about is the position of the bar across my shoulders. I want it there, because I do not want to start off the squat with bad form and have the bar on my neck and have my back curved. While I'm squatting, I focus on coming down with good form because coming up is just strength. So, I try to keep my heels on the ground, my knees not past my toes, keep away from the butt dip, and come to a point where i believe I'm parallel and not cheating myself.

the way that i was tought how to do a squat was to have our feet shoulder width apart and pointing out at a 30 degree angle and sit back first then bend your knees and go up the same way and pick a point in the cieling to look at while you squat it helps from leaning forward or backwards

the tip that always helps me is to remember what muscles you are trying to work by squating. This helps me because i know that i should get my butt down first so that i don't have flexion in my back, and so that i get the most benefit from the exercise.
