Period 3 Weight Training Flexibility

Flexibility is the range of motion possible around a specific joint or series of articulations. Flexibility is specific to a given joint or movement. A person may not be able to function normally if a joint lacks normal movement. The ability to move a joint through an adequate range of movement is important for daily activities in general as well a sports performance. For example, a sprinter may be handicapped by tight, inelastic hamstring muscles since the ability to flex the hip joint will be limited, thus shortening stride length.

Most leisure or recreational activities require only normal amounts of flexibility. The idea that good flexibility is essential for successful performance is based on anecdotal rather than scientific evidence.

Adequate range of movement may be more important for long term injury prevention. Individuals involved with physical activity who have poor flexibility (specific or general) risks exceeding the extensibility limits of the musculoskeletal unit. Once flexibility is assessed and flexibility insufficiency are identified, a stretching program can be customized, emphasizing those areas in need of improvement.

For your blog this week let me know how often you stretch, what areas of your body need it the most, what kind of stretches are you doing, and how long are you holding your stretches.

thats kind of personal but i guess i can let you in on it. I stretch everyday in your class. At home i stretch to, always before games. I usually hold each stretch for about 30 secconds and i do a series of stretches before doing them again.

3 times a week minimum: before and after soccer practice.
calves
hams
groin
quads
gluts
arms (cross the chest)
Before: hold each side twice for max of 15 secs
After: hold each side for upwards of 45 secs

clearly, my legs are the part that need the most stretching for me

For track we've been stretching our torsos, doing butterflies, touching our toes, pretzels, the stretches when you hug your knee in to your chest when sitting, and calve stretches. We do these everyday and hold each stretch for 30-45 seconds (I'm not sure of the exact time). I think that I definitely need all these stretches, but I think my flexibility will improve as we continue in the season.

Hey Mr. Kirk,

I stretch almost everyday during baseball season and two to three times a week, year round. My groin and hips are inflexible. We do walking stretches before lifting and playing and we static for 15-20 seconds each stretch afterwards.

I stretch before and after exercises and whenever I find myself sitting or standing around doing nothing.

My leg muscles (mainly calves and hamstrings) need stretching the most.

I do various stretches and I hold them for around 30-45 seconds.

I stretch every day. In your class i stretch, at lacrosse practice and at home. I do dynamic stretching before every practice and static at the end. I also stretch my thighs or calfs at home if i feel sore or tight

I stretch almost everyday before a game or before I go to the gym. I stretch my calves, groin, qouads, hams, and arms. When I stretch, I try to hold my stretch for about 30 seconds. ALL my stretchs are important, so I dont get hurt during a game or during a lift.

I stretch daily in your class and sometimes before break dance practice. I mostly stretch my calves, quads, and torso, holding each for approximately 30 seconds.

I stretch everyday, morning and night, not including the practices and workouts and weight lifting class I stretch in. My hamstrings and my calves need the most stretching. I do two sets of 60 seconds for each muscle.

Kirk,
I stretch everyday during lacrosse season but in the off season probably five times a week. I feel like the places that need to be stretched the most are your legs, arms and your neck because those are vital in everyday life.(not saying other muscles are not important)In practice do a lot of dynamic stretching which includes my quads, hams, and other leg muscles. And we some static stretching like groin, arms, hips, etc. The static stretches we hold for about 20-30 seconds and the dynamic stretches are more about repetition, and we repeat every one about 15-20 times.

I don't stretch very much at home. The most I really do is stretch when I wake up which would really be a superman, which I hold for about 30 seconds-a minute to wake me up. Now that I think about it, I should probably stretch right now!

I stretch almost every day. I work on mostly my legs but also my bad. I do hamstrings, calfs and some other stretches. I try to hold everything for 20 seconds. I find that stretching your legs helps with speed and agility which ive been working on.

I stretch in your class and anytime I do some physical activity, working out at my house, soccer game, and any other kind of sports. I usually stretch my groin, back hamstrings, and quads.
